AI Transparency – AI Transparency for Moodle
Transparency in the use of artificial intelligence – for instructors and students
Artificial intelligence has long been part of everyday life in higher education. Instructors create learning materials with the help of ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. At the same time, students use AI tools for essays, programming tasks, or project work.
This creates a new challenge for educational institutions: How can the use of artificial intelligence be documented in a transparent, traceable, and responsible manner—without restricting pedagogical freedom?
AI Transparency provides a standardized transparency model for this purpose within Moodle.
Instructors can label AI-generated or AI-assisted course content and provide additional information. In the future, students will also be able to document the extent of AI assistance used in their submissions. Both use cases follow the same principle and foster an open, responsible approach to artificial intelligence.
More than just an AI badge
AI Transparency does more than just label content; the plugin can also document how AI was used.
For example, information such as the following can be recorded:
* AI system used (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini)
* Time of creation
* Extent of AI assistance
* Human review
* Quality assurance
* Individual transparency notes
This fosters trust rather than uncertainty. Students can see which content was created with the help of artificial intelligence and which has been professionally reviewed by the instructor. At the same time, educational institutions gain a consistent basis for transparency, documentation, and institutional AI policies.
Developed for education providers
AI Transparency helps universities, academies, and companies to:
* establish transparency regarding the use of artificial intelligence,
* make quality standards visible,
* implement institutional AI policies,
* support documentation and compliance requirements, and
* sustainably embed the responsible use of AI into the teaching and learning process. AI transparency is thus far more than just the labeling of individual pieces of content. It forms the foundation for a transparent and traceable approach to artificial intelligence across the entire Moodle platform.
Note: If students are also permitted to submit content and mark it as AI-generated, it is essential to install both ZIP files (plugins).
Recommendation: Download both files and pass them on to your Moodle administrator; they will know what to do.
